I work
in clay, wax, or plaster to produce sculpture to be cast in bronze
or bronze resin. I normally takes the first casting from the mould
in bronze resin (sometimes called "cold-cast bronze") to act as a
reference copy for the foundry, and frequently will run an edition
the same size as the bronze edition in bronze resin. Correctly
produced, bronze resin has a high bronze content at the surface,
which will weather extremely well. Whilst there is a considerable
price advantage to bronze resin, it has to be said that it is not
bronze and because it is a new material, its life expectancy beyond
50 years is untested. Where price or weight are important
considerations however, it can be an attractive alternative, and it
is increasingly used, even in public commissions. Stone resins
are also available for a few works where this is appropriate, as an
alternative to bronze resin within the same edition. As a rough
guide on price, bronze resin tends to be half to a third the price
of bronze.
Most sculpture is available in editions of either 8 or 9. In Britain
"art size" editions have traditionally been in multiples of three,
up to a maximum of 12 (though one frequently finds larger editions
these days) plus "artist's copy" which, again traditionally, has
been indeterminate. In France, the system is more rigid, and is set
as "8/IV" (an edition of 8 plus 4 artist copies). As I sell in both
countries, I either produce an edition of 9 with three artist
copies, or an edition of 8 with four copies, so that the two systems
are identical in all but name.
A certain amount of cast work is held by me and in galleries,
otherwise it is cast to order. Delivery time for the latter,
dependent upon size and material is normally 8-16 weeks. Commission
work is currently completing in 20-30 weeks. Prices for new
commissions are the equivalent of edition prices if they are
considered suitable as such and the commissioner is happy for
them to be run as editions.
